Konstantin Wecker: Lyrics and Translations

For the past several years, I have been translating Wecker's songs into English, along with the help of a few of my German friends. Here is a selection of what I consider as some of my better work. The original German lyrics are presented here for each song, followed by my translation. All of these translations are © Paula E. Kirman.

Der Himmel brennt

Jetzt hab i dacht, des is vorbei,
wennsd älter wirst, dann friert des ei,
und plötzlich brennt des oide Feuer wieder.

I steh auf oamoi wieder auf,
wenn d´Sonna aufgeht, und i brauch
koa Aspirin für meine müden Glieder.

Mi hats dawischt, der Himmel brennt,
i hab mi ganz in di verrennt,
i spür wieder die oide Melodie.

Mi hats dawischt, der Himmel brennt,
i hab mi ganz in di verrennt,
der Rhythmus bleibt, neu ist die Fantasie.

Auf oamoi san die Leid zu mir
so freundlich, und des liegt an dir.
Du hast mi wieder zu mir selber bracht.

Ob des der zwoate Frühling is,
ist mir egal, doch oans is gwiß:
Was früher für mich Tag war - war bloß Nacht.

Mi hats dawischt, der Himmel brennt,
i hab mi ganz in di verrennt,
i spür wieder die oide Melodie.

Mi hats dawischt, der Himmel brennt,
i hab mi ganz in di verrennt,
der Rhythmus bleibt, neu ist die Fantasie.

I woaß, nix kann für ewig sei,
wir lassen uns scho wieder frei.
Grad was ned ewig sei muaß, hoit a Ewigkeit.

i spür wieder die oide Melodie.

Mi hats dawischt, der Himmel brennt,
i hab mi ganz in di verrennt,
der Rhythmus bleibt, neu ist die Fantasie.

Heaven Burns

Just when I thought it's over now,
the years go by, they freeze right down,
but suddenly that old fire lights again.

All so quickly I stand tall,
when the sun rises Iwon't fall.
My weary body needs no medicine.

It caught me now, while Heaven burns.
I feel for you, and I have learned
again I hear that same old melody.

It caught me now, while Heaven burns.
I feel for you, and I have learned
The rhythm stays with a brand new fantasy.

Suddenly everyone is to me
So kind and good because they see
how you broght me back into the light.

If that was the second Spring,
I do not kind, but there's one thing:
what once before was day for me, was only night.

It caught me now, while Heaven burns.
I feel for you, and I have learned
again I hear that same old melody.

It caught me now, while Heaven burns.
I feel for you, and I have learned
The rhythm stays with a brand new fantasy.

I know nothing is meant to last,
again we will let go of the past.
What doesn't need to be forever
eternally stays young.

And when it again grows darker here,
I'll know how one belongs so near,
and I'll take my time until the third Spring comes.

It caught me now, while Heaven burns.
I feel for you, and I have learned
again I hear that same old melody.

It caught me now, while Heaven burns.
I feel for you, and I have learned
The rhythm stays with a brand new fantasy.

Sage nein!

Wenn sie jetzt ganz unverhohlen
wieder Nazi-Lieder johlen,
über Juden Witze machen,
über Menschenrechte lachen,
wenn sie dann in lauten Tönen
saufend ihrer Dummheit frönen,
denn am Deutschen hinterm Tresen
muß nun mal die Welt genesen,
dann steh auf und misch dich ein:
Sage nein!

Meistens rückt dann ein Herr Wichtig
die Geschichte wieder richtig,
faselt von der Auschwitzlüge,
leider kennt man's zur Genüge --
mach dich stark und bring dich ein,
zeig es diesem dummen Schwein:
Sage nein!

Ob als Penner oder Sänger,
Bänker oder Müßiggänger,
ob als Priester oder Lehrer,
Hausfrau oder Straßenkehrer,
ob du sechs bist oder hundert,
sei nicht nur erschrecht, verwundert,
tobe, zürne, bring dich ein:
Sage nein!

Und wenn aufgeblasne Herren
dir galant den Weg versperren,
ihre Blicke unter Lallen
nur in deinen Ausschnitt fallen,
wenn sie prahlen von der Alten,
die sie sich zu Hause halten,
denn das Weib ist nur was wert
wie dereinst -- an Heim und Herd,
tritt nicht ein in den Verein:
Sage nein!

Und wenn sie in deiner Schule
plötzlich lästern über Schwule,
schwartze Kinder spüren lassen,
wie sie andre Rassen hassen,
Lehrer, anstatt auszusterben,
Deutschland wieder braun verfärben,
hab dann keine Angst zu schrein:
Sage nein!

Ob als Penner oder Sänger,
Bänker oder Müßiggänger,
ob als Schüler oder Lehrer,
Hausfrau oder Straßenkehrer,
ob du sechs bist oder hundert,
sei nicht nur erschrecht, verwundert,
tobe, zürne, bring dich ein:
Sage nein!

Ob als Penner oder Sänger,
Bänker oder Müßiggänger,
ob als Priester oder Lehrer,
Hausfrau oder Straßenkehrer,
ob du sechs bist oder hundert,
sei nicht nur erschrecht, verwundert,
tobe, zürne, bring dich ein:
Sage nein!

Sage nein!

When again, they're out and open,
howling Nazi-songs and joking,
making fun of every Jew,
and Human Rights is a big laugh to.
When in loud voices they are shouting,
in drunken stupors never doubting,
how the world needs to be saved
because race-mixing is depraved,
don't let them think that this is fine:
Sage nein!

Often some Mister-Real-Big-Shot
corrects history, the whole lot,
whines about the Auschwitz liars
-- we've heard too much from these deniers.
Feel your strength and stop this crime,
Show it to this stupid swine:
Sage nein!

If you're a beggar or a singer,
banker or idle lingerer,
or a priest or a teacher,
housewife or road-sweeper,
be you just six or hundreds stronger --
don't take this madness any longer.
Together, raging, all in time:
Sage nein!

And when gentlemen profusely
stop you on your way so smoothly
just to mumble as they're trying
to look down your dress, while sighing
while they brag about their old wife
they keep separate from real life
because she's only worth to own
in the kitchen, in the home,
then don't tow this party line:
Sage nein!

And when daily in your school
they mock gays and are so cruel,
Black children are made to hear
how other races are to hate and fear.
When teachers, instead of helping it end
color Germany brown* again
then don't be scared to scream your mind:
Sage nein!

If you're a beggar or a singer,
banker or idle lingerer,
a student or a teacher,
housewife or road-sweeper,
be you just six or hundreds stronger --
don't take this madness any longer.
Together, raging, all in time:
Sage nein!

If you're a beggar or a singer,
banker or idle lingerer,
or a priest or a teacher,
housewife or road-sweeper,
be you just six or hundreds stronger --
don't take this madness any longer.
Together, raging, let it shine:
Sage nein!

NOTE: I left the title and chorus line in German, as I felt it gave a much more powerful emphasis than "Say no," which would also be confused with the slogan of the same name in the U. S., referring to the "war on drugs".

Liebes Leben

Liebes Leben, fang mich ein,
halt mich an die Erde.
Kann doch, was ich bin, nur sein,
wenn ich es auch werde.

Gib mir Tränen, gib mir Mut,
und von allem mehr.
Mach mich böse oder gut,
nur nie ungefähr.

Liebes Leben, abgemacht?
Darfst mir nicht verfliegen.
Hab noch soviel Mitternacht
sprachlos vor mir liegen.

Lovely Life

Lovely life, take my hand,
hold me to the Earth.
I can be just what I am,
or grow and find rebirth.

Give me tears, give me courage
and build everything more.
Make me bitter, make me good,
but never between shores.

Lovely life, don't you agree?
You should never leave my side.
So many nights are left for me,
speechless in my stride.

Wenn der Sommer nicht mehr weit ist

Wenn der Sommer nicht mehr weit ist
und der Himmel violett,
weiß ich, daß das meine Zeit ist,
weil die Welt dann wieder breit ist,
satt und ungeheuer fett.

Wenn der Sommer nicht mehr weit ist
und die Lift nach Erde schmeckt,
ist's egal, on man gescheit ist,
wichtig ist, daß man bereit ist
und sein Fleisch nicht mehr versteckt.

Und dann will ich, was ich tun will, endlich tun.
An Genuß bekommt man nälich nie zuviel.

Und dann will ich, was ich tun will, endlich tun.
An Genuß bekommt man nälich nie zuviel.

When the Summer is not Far

When the summer is not far,
and the sky is violet,
then I know that this my time is
for the world again so bright, is
stuffed, and full, and richly set.

When the summer is not far,
and the taste of Earth is in the air,
if you are smart it doesn't matter,
inhibitions you must shatter
and show your flesh without a care.

And then what I want to do,
I finally will do.
We never get enough pleasure, and that's our shame.
We should never rest, be lazy, me or you,
for pleasure never was an easy game.

When the summer is not far,
and the sky, an opal hat,
then I will not take any cover,
while the world's more than a lover,
and the joy does not taste flat

When my end is not far,
the beginning will always come,
because then it is not a trifle,
if you did not waste a life full
of the time you did outrun

And then what I want to do,
I finally will do.
We never get enough pleasure, and that's our shame.
We should never rest, be lazy me or you,
for pleasure never was an easy game.

When the summer is not far,
and the sky is violet,
then I know that this my time is,
for the world again so bright, is
stuffed, and full and richly set --
stuffed and full and richly set.

Was ich an dir mag

denn so schnell verfällt ins Allgemeine,
was zuvor so ganz besonders war.

ach -- dein ganzes Wesen fesselt mich,

alles, was man an sich selbst vermißt.

Manchmal ist's dein Gang,
und manches Mal dein lachen,
manchmal deine Frechheit, deine Wut.
was ich an dir mag: Du tust mir gut.

denn so schnell verfällt ins Allgemeine,
was zuvor so ganz besonders war.

What I Love About You

The reasons I love you are indescribable,
Like an unwritten poem in my mind.
Better I restrict myself with wonder,
And not explain my love, sublime.

The reasons I love you, they are a secret,
Every word can be quite dangerous
For words quickly fall, becoming common
What before was once so special, descends like mist.

Is it in your voice?
Is it in your hands?
Your entire being hold me true.
Even to describe you I'd fill volumes,
It is better I just say: I love you.

The reason I love you are without question
Also a part of what is within me
Everything I hope for, all that I worry,
Everything I feel but cannot see.

Sometimes it is your walk,
Sometimes it is your laughter.
Sometimes it's how you rage like the sea.
Even this is not enough --and all the while,
The reasons I love you: all you've done for me.

The reasons I love you, they are a secret,
Every word can be quite dangerous
For words quickly fall, becoming common
What before was once so special, descends like mist.

Es sind nicht immer die Lauten stark

Es sind nicht immer die Lauten stark,
nur weil sie lautstark sind.
Es gibt so viele, denen das Leben
ganz leise viel echter gelingt.

The Loud Ones are not Always Strong

The loud ones are not always strong
just because they seem that way.
There are many for whom life
is real without very much to say.

They don't stand on stages, they don't make headlines,
they battle at obscure places.
They struggle to resist surrounding oppression,
every day wearing tired faces.

They have no agenda, no fancy plan;
they are too hard on themselves.
They just want to be upfront and direct,
no gurus, or self-help books on shelves.

They never write songs,
but are melody.
They walk so upright,
like I can't be.

Wenn unsre Brüder kommen

Wenn unsre Brüder kommen
mit Bomben und Gewehren,
dann wolln wir sie umarmen,
dann wolln wir uns nicht wehren.

Sie sehen aus wie Feinde,
sie tragen Uniformen,
sie sind wie wir verblendet
und festgefahrn in Normen.

Auch wenn sie anders sprechen,
wir wolln mit ihnen reden.
Es solln die Präsidenten
sich doch allein befehden!

Wenn unsre Brüder kommen
mit Bomben und Gewehren,
dann wolln wir sie umarmen,
dann wolln wir uns nicht wehren.

When we see our brothers come

When we see our brothers come
with rifles, bombs, and guns,
then let's embrace them tightly,
then we would not have to run.

The look just like enemies,
they are wearing uniforms,
they are blinded, just like us.
and like us, are stuck in norms.

If they talk in a different voice,
we must still go to them and speak,
and the presidents who rule
should fight themselves, if peace they seek.

But, before they do arrive,
it is helpful to remember
this love of everyone
with ourselves, it must begin here.

When we see our brothers come
with rifles, bombs, and guns,
then let's embrace them tightly,
then we would not have to run.

Jetzt muß endlich was passieren,
weil sonst irgendwas in mir zerbricht.

Enough is not enough

That the sky today has risen
cannot really be a mistake.
And for sure there lingers no chance,
the lights from mist do freedom take.

I sit motionless at the window,
watching market women catch a smile.
Somewhere out there is pulsation,
and I grow more restless all the while.

There is nothing out on the street,
as I’m running past young dogs, and wave goodbye.
Summer heat glues itself to houses,
and the subway tunnels breathe in heavy sighs.

The belly of this city swells,
and I’m ready for it to explode.
On a house there squats a well-fed god
preaching modesty from his abode:

Enough is not enough,
I don’t lie to myself, ever.
Silence is a bluff,
enough is enough, never.

For far too long I’ve sat around,
above earth where the light already steams.
Now finally something must happen,
or something else will break in me.

This tickle on the tongue,
even waste-pipe water tastes of wine.
Now again the mouth is licked,
and then I dive into the great divine.

Come on, we’ll break out tomorrow,
and then we’ll stand as one against the wind.
And the gods will finally vanish,
when we are godless in the end.

On the first rows, there one praises,
obeying lessons and morality to extremes.
But my Ego it is holy,
and for me is often more than what it seems.

Enough is not enough,
I don’t lie to myself, ever.
Silence is a bluff,
enough is enough, never.

Kokain

Meine Seele löst sich,
fliegt dahin.
Kokain, Kokain.

Will nicht bleiben, will nicht fliehn.
Kokain, Kokain.

Wenn im Winter Wiesen blühn.
Kokain, Kokain.

Höllenfeuer über'n Himmel ziehn.
Kokain, Kokain.

Hol mich raus, ich kann nicht mehr,
Alles Leichte wird so schwer,
Und was gilt, das geht dahin.
Kokain, Kokain.

Schwäne singen in den Tuillerien.
Kokain, Kokain.

Abgehangen in den Galaxien.
Kokain, Kokain.

Eingesperrt in meinen Phantasien.
Kokain, Kokain.

Wiß nicht mehr, woher, wohin.
Kokain, Kokain.

Hol mich raus, ich kann nicht mehr,
Alles Leichte wird so schwer,
Und was gilt, das geht dahin.
Kokain, Kokain.

Bin nicht wirklich, bin nur ausgeliehn.
Kokain, Kokain.

Nur noch Nacht, wo früher Sonne schien.
Kokain, Kokain.

Kokain, Kokain.

Hol mich raus, ich kann nicht mehr,
Alles Leichte wird so schwer,
Und was gilt, das geht dahin.
Kokain.

Alles Leichte wird so schwer,
Und was gilt, das geht dahin.
Kokain.

Cocaine

My soul it loosens,
flies away.
Cocaine, cocaine.

I can't escape, but I cannot stay.
Cocaine, cocaine.

When in winter the grass grows so high.
Cocaine, cocaine.

Hell's fires race across the sky.
Cocaine, cocaine.

Get me out, I can't take this pain,
All that was, becomes in vain,
And what's true, truth vanishes.
Cocaine.

Swans sing in the gardens green.
Cocaine, cocaine.

Hung off in the galaxies.
Cocaine, cocaine.

Trapped in my fantasies.
Cocaine, cocaine.

Don't know anymore, where, where to go.
Cocaine, cocaine.

Get me out, I can't take this pain,
All that was, becomes in vain,
And what's true, truth vanishes.
Cocaine.

Am I not real, am I just combined?
Cocaine, cocaine.

There's only night where the sun used to shine.
Cocaine, cocaine.

It builds me up and ruins me every time.
Cocaine, cocaine.

Get me out, I can't take this pain,
All that was becomes in vain,
And what's true, truth vanishes.
Cocaine.

All that was becomes in vain,
And what's true, truth vanishes.
Cocaine.

sagt man, weiße Nebel, wunderbar.

Was für ein Gefü
tiefer als das Meer?
doch wie tief ist das Meer?

Komm mein Lieb, wir lassen uns
das Fluß hinunter treiben
legen alles ab, was uns beengt.
Was f*uuml;r eine Fahrt! Die Erde dampft,
die Trommeln scweigen,
nur noch dieses Wollen, das uns drängt.

Was für ein Gefü
tiefer als das Meer?
doch wie tief ist das Meer?

Komm mein Lieb, wir lassen uns
das Fluß hinunter treiben
laß uns schrechlich unvernünftig sein,
und anstatt uns an den Ängsten
endlich aufzureiben,
dringen wir unendlich in uns ein.

Was für ein Gefü
tiefer als das Meer?
doch wie tief ist das Meer?

Love Song in the Old Voice

Come my love, let us go and
drift down the river,
no one knows where this will lead us to.
It matters not if we will stay as one forever,
it is only that we felt each other true.

Oh, what a feeling,
deeper than the sea,
but how deep is the sea?

Come my love, let us go and
drift down the river,
and do the same as in those former years.
Tenderly the waves strike, and then out of the water
a wonderful white fog, they say, appears.

Oh, what a feeling,
deeper than the sea,
but how deep is the sea?

Come my love, let us go and
drift down the river.
Lay to rest all that hold us bound.
What a thrilling ride! The Earth steams,
then the drums are silent,
only this desire holds us down.

Oh, what a feeling,
deeper than the sea,
but how deep is the sea?

Come my love, let us go and
drift down the river,
let us be unreasonable and how,
instead of tiring
with fears that make us shiver,
we'll go deep into each other, here and now.

Oh, what a feeling,
deeper than the sea,
but how deep is the sea?

Text-Impressionen

meine Lebensuhr, doch, doch

All, ihr seid hinter all dem,
was man kennt, hinter all dem,
was es gibt, ich bin ganz allein heir,
ich bin ganz allein in
mir, ich habe keinen Raum
und keine Zeit, ich bin die
Dunkenheit, die tiefe Dunkelheit.

Ich fühle nichts, ich sehe nichts,
ich bin nichts als ein Surren
in einem Hirn, das es schon lange
nicht mehr gibt.

Schwarz.

Nur schwarz.

Ist das das Gesicht der Ewigkeit?

Das Herz rast, der Kopf zerplatzt
in Myriaden kleiner
widerlicher, schleimiger Schrumpfköpfe,
die krallen sich
an meiner Brust fest,
holt mich denn keiner hier raus!!!

Text-Impression
Exit from the novel Uferlos (Boundless)

This way it is good,
just this sound forever in my ears,
that is myself,
that is my own sound, that it
my inner clock, yes, sure
I am still living, can't you
hear that, this sound is the proof
that I am still living

But you can't hear that,
you are too far
away, you are on another planet,
in another galaxy.
You are behind all
that one knows, behind everything
that exists. I am all alone here,
I am all alone in
me; I have no room
and no time, I am the
Darkness, the deep darkness.

I don't feel, I don't see,
I am nothing but a humming
in a brain, that for a long time
has not existed.

Black.

Just black.

Is that the face of eternity?

The heart races, the head explodes
into millions of small
horrible, slimy shrunken heads,
they cramp onto
my chest,
they bite into my skin,
how that itches, I'm itching
my arms bloody, my back,
those are not shrunken heads,
they are insects, cockroaches,
who have built a nest in my flesh.
Cockroaches, the
kitchen is full of cockroaches,
I tread on them, yes, it is good this way.
Crunch, crunch, isn't that a
nice sound, every
step hundreds of brown cockroaches,
I dance and step on cockroaches,
all dancers step on cockroaches,
all dancers turn on cockroaches,
I have to kill them all,
even those under my skin,
yes, those under my skin, my G-d,
won't anyone get me out of here?!!!

Uferlos

Was haben sich die Jahre überstürzt
in all den Jahren
nichts ist geblieben, was so bleibend schien

Oh -- sicherlich kein allzu edles Leben
nie perfeckt und immer zwischendrin
nie gefeit dagegen, zu versinken, abzuheben
aber immerhin -- immerhin:

Uferlos

Das geht nicht ohne Risse,
ohne Narben, ohne Falten
doch will ich mich halt weiter selbst
erfinden und gestalten
auch kotzt mich diese Bravheit meistens an.

Oh -- sicherlich kein allzu braves Leben
manchmal ohne Ziel und ohne Sinn
hab mir sicher oft zu viel gegeben
aber immerhin:

Uferlos

Uferlos

Boundless

The years passed by so quicky
Every year getting much faster
Now nothing's left of what had seemed to last.
Enough was not enough for me,
For all the joy and tears
I will not run from hell like in the past.

Oh -- I'll admit it was not a very noble life
Never perfect and always in-between
Never safe from sinking, or taking off into the distance
But at least it was -- at least it was:

Boundless

This could not have happened without cracks,
Or scars, or wrinkles
And then someone gets mad and picks a fight.
But I want to continue to
Invent and be creative
And for me this good behavior is not right.

Oh -- I'll admit it was not a very good life
Sometimes without purpose, without much.
Sure I often gave myself too much in this life
But at least it was, at least it was:

Boundless

And again the river forces
The winter through the town
It rinses former times into the sea
It overflows the mountains, nothing to keep it bound
Th gates are flying open, I rush with all the strength in me:

Boundless

Kleines Herbstlied

Der Sommer geht vorbei
und all seine Lieder
legen sich bis zum Mai
zum Sterben nieder.

Der Sommer geht vorüber
mit ihm ein Fetzen Leben
die Tage merklich trüber
das Herz schlägt leicht daneben.

Der Sommer geht vorbei
und mit ihm stirbt mein Sehnen
die letzte Liebelei
die Lügen und die Tränen.

Der Sommer geht dahin
die Frage wird zur Qual:
Wer weiß, ob ich noch bin
beim nächsten Mal?

Der Sommer geht vorbei
doch dieses Sterben
wird bald, wie nebenbei
ein Blühen werden.

Little Autumn Song

The summer ends today
and all of its songs
lie down until May
to die while still strong.

The summer ends this time
with a part of this life's treat
the days with much less shine
the heart just off a beat.

The summer ends today
and with it my longing dies
the last love affair fades
with the tears and the lies.

The summer ends and then
this question needs an answer:
who knows the next time if
I will still exist here?

The summer ends today
but all this death looming
will soon, like a new day
become a blooming.
